How high can I build a garden wall?

Planning rules generally limit a wall next to a highway to one metre and elsewhere to two metres without permission, and your own deeds may say more. We will flag it if what you want looks like it needs an application.

Can my leaning wall be straightened?

Not reliably. Once a wall has moved, taking it down and rebuilding on a corrected foundation is the honest answer. Propping and repointing a leaning wall just delays it.

Does a retaining wall need drainage?

Yes. Water pressure behind a retaining wall is what pushes it over, so drainage and weep holes go in as part of the build, not as an optional extra.

How deep does the foundation need to be?

It depends on the height of the wall and the ground it sits on, and it is dug and looked at rather than assumed. A low garden wall needs far less than a two-metre boundary wall or anything retaining ground, and the quote names what we are digging.

Do I need my neighbour's agreement?

If the wall sits on the boundary it is worth having the conversation before we start, and a wall astride the line can bring the Party Wall Act into it. We will flag it when it looks likely, and you should confirm the position yourself.
