A few tiles have slipped. Does that mean the roof is finished?

Not on its own. Slipped tiles are often corroded nails or a soft batten in one area, which is a repair. If the same thing is happening across the whole roof, replacement becomes the better spend, and we will say so.

Why does the mortar on my ridge keep cracking?

Mortar bedding moves with the roof and with temperature, so it cracks and eventually lets go. A dry ridge system fixes the ridge tiles mechanically over a ventilated roll, which is why we fit it as standard now.

Can you work on concrete tiles from the 1970s?

Yes. Interlocking concrete tiles of that era are common around here and are still repairable, though some patterns are discontinued and need the nearest current equivalent.

How long should a tiled roof last?

Concrete interlocking tiles are commonly quoted at around fifty years and clay plain tiles longer than that. What actually decides it is the battens, the nails and the membrane underneath, which is why a roof often needs work long before the tiles themselves are finished.

Can you replace just one section of tiles?

Yes, and on a roof that is sound elsewhere that is the sensible spend. The join is the part to get right, so we lap the new work into the old rather than leaving a seam for water to find.
