Can you patch render rather than do the whole wall?

Yes, and for a small blown area on a side elevation that is sensible. A patch on a painted front elevation will show unless the wall is repainted, so we usually quote the patch plus a full coat of paint.

Is silicone render worth the extra?

It is through-coloured, so there is no repainting every few years, and it is more flexible than sand and cement. On a house that has cracked render and needs repainting often, it usually pays for itself.

Will painting my walls stop damp?

Not on its own, and the wrong paint makes it worse by trapping moisture. If a wall is damp we deal with the source first, then use a breathable masonry paint.

How long before new render can be painted?

Sand and cement render needs several weeks to dry and carbonate before it takes paint, and painting it too early is a common cause of flaking. A through-coloured silicone render avoids the question entirely, because it is never painted.

How often does masonry paint need redoing?

A good breathable masonry paint on properly prepared walls is commonly quoted at ten to fifteen years. The preparation decides that more than the paint does, which is why the hacking off and stabilising matter so much.
