My chimney only leaks in driving rain. Is that the flashing?

Usually, yes. Wind-driven rain finds the top edge of a cover flashing that was never chased in, or a soaker that is too short. Both are lead faults and both are repairable without touching the rest of the roof.

Can you repair a split in my lead bay roof?

Sometimes it can be lead-welded, but a split usually means the bay is too long and the sheet is fatiguing. Re-covering that bay to the correct size lasts, where a patch tends to split again a metre further along.

Is there an alternative to lead?

There are proprietary flashing tapes and GRP details, and they have their place on a low-value or hard-to-reach spot. On a visible chimney or a valley we would rather fit lead, because it is what lasts.

How long should leadwork last?

Lead laid to the right code with correct bay lengths is a sixty-year-plus material, longer than the covering around it. Almost all the lead we replace failed because the bays were too long or the code too thin, not because it wore out.

Do you take the old lead away?

Yes, stripped lead leaves site with us. It has a scrap value and that is reflected in the quote, so you are not paying to dispose of something that is worth money.
