How do I know if my pointing needs doing?

If you can rake the joint out with a key or a screwdriver, or the mortar is receding behind the brick face, it is due. Open joints let water in, and on a chimney or a parapet that is where the damp comes from.

Why lime instead of cement?

Because lime is softer than the brick and lets the wall breathe. Cement is harder than a soft stock brick, so moisture has to escape through the brick face, which is what makes it spall.

Can you repoint just the damaged areas?

Yes, and often that is the right call, particularly on a sheltered elevation. On an exposed front where the joints are receding across the whole face, doing it all at once looks better and lasts longer.

How long does repointing last?

A properly raked and matched job on a sheltered elevation is commonly good for fifty years or more. Exposed elevations, chimneys and parapets weather faster, which is why those are usually first to come round again.

Can you repoint in the rain?

No. Fresh mortar has to be protected from rain until it has set, and from strong sun and frost as well. We work to the forecast, and on an exposed elevation we will sheet the scaffold.
