Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

For a front garden, surfacing more than five square metres in a material that is not permeable, without drainage to a soakaway or a border, needs permission. Building it permeable or draining it into your own ground keeps it under permitted development. We build it that way as standard.

Which lasts longest, blocks or tarmac?

Both last well on a correct base. Block paving can be lifted and re-laid if a service needs digging, and individual blocks can be replaced. Tarmac is a faster install and a cleaner look on a larger drive.

Why has my driveway sunk in the wheel tracks?

Almost always an inadequate sub-base. There is no surface repair for that, because the problem is under the blocks. It needs taking up and the base rebuilding where the ruts are.

How soon can I park on a new driveway?

Block paving will usually take a car within a day or two of being jointed. Tarmac wants a few days before heavy or turning loads, and resin bound needs whatever cure time the material specifies. You get the dates for your surface with the quote.

Can a new drive go over the old one?

Tarmac can sometimes be overlaid onto a sound existing base, and where that works it saves real money. If the problem is the base rather than the surface, overlaying buys a year or two at most, and we will say so.
