What are the little lead strips on my roof?

Those are tingles, clipped over a slate to hold it after the nail has failed. One or two are a fair repair. A roof covered in them has nail sickness, and re-slating is the answer.

Is fibre-cement slate any good?

It is a sound covering, much lighter and cheaper than natural slate. It does not weather the same way, so on a period frontage natural slate usually looks right while fibre-cement suits a rear roof or an outbuilding.

Can you reuse my existing slates?

Often a good proportion of them. We sort them on site and make the shortfall up with matching slate, which keeps the cost down and the roof looking its age.

How do I tell whether my slate roof needs repair or replacing?

Look for tingles, slipped slates, and slate dust in the gutters. A few slipped slates is a repair. Dust in the gutters and tingles dotted across the roof means the nails are going, and that is a re-slate.

Is slate heavier than tile?

Natural slate is generally lighter per square metre than concrete interlocking tile, so changing from concrete to slate is rarely a structural problem. Going the other way can be, which is why we look at the rafters before quoting a change of covering.
