Is felt not the old-fashioned option?

The felt that gave the material its reputation was a different product. Torch-on high-performance felt is reinforced, laid in layers, and is a mainstream commercial covering. The bad ones you have seen were usually laid flat with no fall.

Can felt be laid over my existing roof?

Occasionally, if the existing covering is sound, dry and has fall. More often overlaying traps water in the old build-up, so we would rather strip it and see the deck.

Will there be a smell or a fire risk?

Torching produces a bitumen smell for the day, and it does need care around timber and openings. We manage hot works with the right kit and keep clear of anything combustible.

How long does a torch-on felt roof take to lay?

A typical garage or extension roof is one to two days once the old covering is off, weather allowing. Felt cannot go onto a wet deck, so a damp week can push it back.

Can felt be repaired later?

Yes, easily, and that is one of its real advantages. A damaged area is cleaned back and a new patch torched in so it bonds to the existing cap sheet, which means a repair never turns into re-covering the roof.
